Course objectives
In this short course, we’ll first update ourselves on the major areas of pragmatic meaning including the way in which speakers convey intentionality (speech acts and illocutionary force) and encode context (indexicality), and how those they address infer meanings (implicatures) that aren’t actually stated. Whilst pragmatics has traditionally been thought of as the study of utterance meaning, we’ll also explore recent approaches which focus on the context-sensitive nature of lexical items and the inferences they invite. A further area we’ll consider is the extent to which speakers show their awareness of the pragmatic effects of their utterances and attempt to guide their interpretation. Having established this foundation, we’ll then turn to the pragmatic skills that learners bring to the task of language learning and the thorny question of how language teachers should approach pragmatics in the second language learning context.
