Course objectives
The course addresses the period of British history and literature from 1900 till the present. The aim of the subject is to introduce chief authors, literary movements, historical events, cultural values and norms of the era and study their interdependence. The course models the concept of integrated, topic-based teaching and learning which uses discussions, problem-solving tasks, project work and other modern methods to enhance students´knowledge but also critical thinking skills, reading skills and linguistic, civil and other competencies. The class also models the integrated format of teaching history, literature and culture, with an emphasis on cross-curricular learning and tandem teaching.
Learning outcomes
The student:
- will be able to read, analyse and interpret literary texts in English in the historical and literary context;
- will be able to detect mutual determination of historical events and their imprint in art;
- will have produced a portfolio showcasing their work both in class and outside, demonstrating their knowledge and competences;
- will have read two literary works of the period.

  • 2. World War I and the fall of the empire: the War poets;
  • 3. The interwar period and World War II: dark vision of the future by George Orwell.
  • 4. Britain in the 1950s: The Angry Young Men;
  • 5. Britain in the 1960s: Postmodernism;
  • 6. Britain in the 1970s and "herstory": women writers;
  • 7. The 1980s and British ethnic writing.
  • 8. The Devolution era and regional literatures.
  • 9. Into the Millennium: contemporary British poetry.
  • 10. Into the Millennium: contemporary British drama.
  • 11. Into the Millennium: contemporary British literature for children and young adults.
