Course objectives
Main objectives can be summarized as follows:

- to combine knowledge received in the lectures and by self-study of specialised literature with experimental laboratory verifying of chemical laws.
- to lead the students to careful work and well-advised work in the physico-chemical laboratory, to responsible preparation for the work, to well-arranged work with data received in the laboratory, and to self-formulating of conclusions of the experiments.
Syllabus
  • 1. Determination of accuracy and reproducibility of measurement with different kinds of pipettes and micropipettes.
  • 2. Determination of surface tension by means of stalagmometry.
  • 3. Viscosity (determination of viscosity by means of Höppler viskosimeter, temperature-dependence of viscosity of liquids).
  • 4. Thermodynamics of Daniell galvanic cell.
  • 5. Potentiometric determination of dissociation constant of a weak acid.
  • 6. Conductometry.
  • 7. Photometric determination of dissociation constant of tetrabrom-m-kresolsulphophtalein.
  • 8. Photometric study of reaction kinetics.
  • 9. Polarimetric study of kinetics of acid hydrolysis of saccharose.
  • 10. Refractometry of ethanol - water mixtures.
  • 11. Kinetic-spectrophotometric determination of ascorbic acid.
  • 12. Potentiometric determination of ascorbic acid.
  • 13. Adsorption of food-dye E 102 (tartrasine) on active charcoal.

Assessment methods
Termination:
1) Passing of the first lesson (safety of work in chemical laboratory).
2) Passing a test (in the beginnigg of the course. The exact term will be announced in advance) on theory related to laboratory exercises of this course).
It is necessary to receive at least 60 % of points. Two repeatings of the test are allowed.
The content of the test corresponds with lectures on physical chemistry (lecture, seminar)and with lecture notes: Cídlová, Hana. Laboratorní cvičení z fyzikální chemie. Brno : MU v Brně, 2003. 124 s. ISBN 80-210-3300-2.
3) Passing of the second lesson "Pipetting".
4) Passing of at least 8 more lessons.
5) Correct protocol related to pipetting.
6) Correct protocols related to at least 8 other lessons.
