Course objectives
At the end of the course students should be able to: - to explain the most important linguistic styles, especially the functional styles, - to respect the language, stylistic and communication standards when speaking, - to understand and explain the dynamics of functional styles, - to interpret the stylistic theory and understand it.
Syllabus
  • 1. Stylistics as a linguistic branch, basic terminology. 2. Stylistics in context with other scientific branches and theories / communication, culture of the language and speech, rhetoric, explication of the literary text, inter-textuality (sequence of texts) and others. 3. A survey of the evolution of stylistic knowledge in our country, status quo. 4. Style differentiation of the contemporary Czech language, objective and subjective styles. 5. Functional styles and their dynamism. Characteristic features of the individual spheres of style, style intersections in communication. 6. Characteristic features of the functional styles (basic and principal styles from the social aspect). 7. Stylistic value of the language and compositional resources. Style levels. 8. Structure of the text, its structuring, style procedures and stylistic forms taught in basic schools. 9. Methods of the stylistic research and stylistic analyses of the texts.

Teaching methods
Lectures.A lecture combined with sebsequent discussions on the specialized issues of the subject.
Assessment methods
Subject is finished by credit. Credit requirements: Written test in the end of the term. The test includes approximately 20 short questions focused to elementary language phenomena. To be successfull student has to answer 80 % of them.
