Course objectives
Students will explain the basic principles of communication with the foreigner. They understand the concept of intercultural sensitivity and is prepared to improve oneself in this respect. Students understand the specifics of communication with the pupil and adult whose mother tongue is not Czech. Students acquire the basic principles of verbal (spoken and written) and non-verbal communication with a foreigner.
Syllabus
  • 1. General principles of communication with foreigners. 2. Intercultural sensitivity - theory and practice. 3. Specifics of communication with pupil whose mother tongue is not Czech. 4. Specifics of communication with an adult foreigner. 5.-6. Non-verbal communication - cultural universality and differencies(pictograms, means of paragliding, body language - mimics, gestures, proxemics, haptics, visual contact, etc.). 7.-8. Verbal communication - written (ways of addressing etc.). 9. Verbal communication - spoken; giving information and instruction. 10.-11. Problem topics and taboos in cultures. 12. Different perceptions of cultural specifics.

Teaching methods
Lesson type: seminar. A seminar, active students work , discussion about the specialized issues of the subject. Class discussion, presentations projects.
Assessment methods
Seminar work consisting of two parts: 1) a short discussion of one of the selected sub-areas of communication with a foreigner, and 2) an analysis of the model communication situation. Scope of seminar work - 5 pages at minimum; requirements will be specified at the first lesson.
