Course objectives
In the subject, students win basic general linguistic concepts and the basic concept of language and speech, especially from the point of view of structural linguistics, basic knowledge on the national language and its stratification. At the same time, they deepen their elementary knowledge of individual linguistic disciplines and thus create prerequisites for studying other linguistic disciplines. Students are confronted with language e-resources and their usage for study of language levels.
Learning outcomes
After finishing the course, the student:
a) is oriented in the basic terms of general linguistics;
b) knows the terminology of basic and selected special linguistic disciplines, which he will use in theoretical linguistic subjects and in the teaching of the Czech language and style;
c) knows important personalities of Czech linguistics and their basic works;
d) can explain the language situation in the Czech Republic, Europe and the world;
e) can describe current language e-resources and their usage in teaching Czech.
Syllabus
  • Angličtina 1st block: Language. Character. Concept. Importance. Meaning. Language and speech. Natural languages. Artificial languages. Language situation. Communication. Communicative situation, communicative function. Speech and speaking as an activity. Functions of language. Language and thought. Language and Society.
  • 2nd block: National language and its stratification. Language policy. Language culture. Mother tongue and foreign language. The status of Czech as a mother tongue and as a foreign language. Origin, emergence and development of language.
  • 3rd block: Classification of languages. Position of languages ​​in European countries. Bilingualism, diglossia. Social frame of reference (language). Language passport.
  • 4th block: Linguistics. Linguistic disciplines. Linguistics and other disciplines (semantics, pragmatics). Basic linguistic concepts. Language structure. Linguistic planes. Units of linguistic levels (phoneme, morpheme, syntagma, sentence, text). Grammatical categories. Basic terms.
  • 5th block: Outline of the development of linguistics. Prominent personalities of Czech and foreign linguistics.

Teaching methods
- Lecture with graphical presentation;
- Discussion on some linguistics problems;
- Study hours of some theme (linguistic disciplines and linguistic terminology, languages of the world, slavonic languages).
Assessment methods
The final colloquium shall prove the knowledge by ONLINE WRITTEN EXAM. It includes conclude (test) and open-ended questions. Students get points for each answer. To pass the written exam students have to win 75 % of all points.
