Course objectives
Students acquire knowledge and skills in the field of functional and formal morphology of the contemporary Czech language. They deepen their knowledge of basic morphological terms (building word form, morph, morpheme) and their understanding. They deepen their knowledge of essential functional topics, and especially formal morphology, and thus create important prerequisites for the study of other linguistic disciplines.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this course the students:
1. will be able to deal with standard morphological plan of the Czech language;
2. will understand the problems of the functional and formal morphology;
3. will be able to recognize type of morpheme, grammatical structure of the word, criteria of classification of the parts of speech (morphological, semantic and syntactical criteria);
4. will be able to recognize the morphological categories of the nouns and verbs, grammatical forms of the nouns and the verbs (usage of the grammatical forms, variants, irregularity in the declination and the conjugation);
5. will know uninflected parts of speech in the Czech stylistic aspects in the morphology
6. to explain the tendency of the contemporary Czech morphology.
Syllabus
  • 1st block: Morphological terminology Word shape construction. Definition of functional and formal morphology. Grammatical categories.
  • 2nd block: Parts of speech and their classification. Declension of native and borrowed nouns.
  • 3rd block: Adjectives and their classification. Declension of adjectives. Pronouns and their classification. Declension of pronouns. Numerals and their sorting. Types of declension of numerals.
  • 4th block: Verbs and their division. Forms of verbs and their formation. Verb grammatical categories – person and number.
  • 5th block: Verb grammatical categories – tense, manner, gender and aspect. Verb class and patterns. Transitions between verb classes.
  • 6th block: Inflexible parts of speech, their characteristics and internal division.

Teaching methods
lecture, self study, active analytical students´ work in the analysis of texts, active synthetic students´ work in the interpretation of linguistic phenomena, discussion about the professional course issues
Assessment methods
Written test and oral examination.
Written test consists of 30 questions evaluated by 30 points. Students must obtain 80 % right answers (24 points).
Oral examination. It includes theoretical themen of the course. The student decides by lot two questions. The answers are evaluated according to the correctness and to the speech cultivation, too.
