Course objectives
The aim of the subject is to outline the development of the Czech literature between the years 1918 and 1945. The main emphasis is put on the problematic nature of individual literary genres, key personalities, movements and groups, as well as the social context.
Learning outcomes
Students will get a deeper insight into trends and genres of Czech literature in the period in question. They will be able to identify and analyze the style of outstanding personalities of the literary process in the particular period.

  • 1. General characteristics of the years 1918-1939. 2. Literature about the First World War. 3. Poetry between the two wars. 4. Prose between the two wars. 5. Drama and Theatre between the two wars. 6. Literary criticism and periodicals between the two wars. 7. Literature in the Czech lands written in german. 8. General characteristics of the years 1938-1945. 9. Poetry in the period of the German occupation. 10. Prose in the period of the German occupation. 11. Drama and Theatre in the period of the German occupation. 12. Literary criticism and periodicals during the Nazi occupation.

Teaching methods
In the form of seminars (interpretations and analysis of selected works), students will get a deeper insight into literary trends and movements of Czech poetry and prose in the years 1918-1945. They will be able to identify and analyze the style of outstanding personalities of Czech poetry and prose, significant for that particular period. Students will further develop their literary knowledge and interpretational skills with the aim to communicate with a literary work more efficiently. They will creatively use their knowledge gained not only in contact classes but also in their individual study of recommended literature which they will be able to discuss regularly with their teacher.
Assessment methods
Type of course: seminar. Type of completion: oral examination. In the seminars students intepret given texts as a whole class and give their presentations. At the exam their knowledge of at least 40 books is tested.
