Course objectives
The aim of the subject is to deepen students' theoretical knowledge and their ability to explain stylistic theory, understand it and be able to use it when creating their own text, to create linguistically correct and stylistically refined texts. The goal is also to be able to carry out a stylistic analysis of the text and to understand the specifics of different types of communication situations and functionally differentiated texts.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, the student will be able to: - interpret stylistic theory. - know stylistic terminology. - define and characterize basic functional styles. - define and characterize basic stylistic procedures and formations. - communicate linguistically correctly and stylistically/stylistically refined.
Syllabus
  • 1st block: Basic stylistic terminology. Theoretical and practical mastery of the stylistic differentiation of the Czech language. The contribution of functional linguistics, the current concept of Czech stylistics. 2nd block: Stylistic means of expression and composition. Stylistic value constant and variable (contextual). Basic compositional phenomena (procedures, formations, genres). 3rd block: Characteristics of basic functional styles, stylistic sphere, stylistic layer of language devices and stylistic standards: commonly understood, professional, administrative, journalistic, rhetorical, artistic, essay style. Primary and secondary styles. 4th block: Text and its characteristics. Communication spoken x written, monologic x dialogical, private x public and other functional dichotomies. 5th block: Stylistic analysis – basic principles and goals of stylistic analysis. Teaching takes place in blocks according to the schedule.
Teaching methods
Online seminar: seminar exercises focused on basic stylistic theory and terminology and their application in practice. Other teaching methods will include microtasks, discussions, problem interviews, etc.; An interactive course outline will be available.
Assessment methods
The course ends with an exam, which consists of a written and an oral part. The exam takes place face-to-face at the faculty. Part of the written part of the exam is a verification of knowledge of theory and terminology and a stylistic evaluation of the linguistic means of the text; this part has about 20 questions and you have to answer at least 70% of them correctly. The written part of the exam is a condition for access to the oral part. The oral part is a debate on one of the thematic areas. A prerequisite for access to the exam is the fulfillment of the assigned intermediate tasks and tests, including a stylistic analysis.
