Course objectives
Students will gain a literary-historical overview of the changes in Czech literature for children and youth from the beginning to the present. Emphasis is placed on the form of current book production for children.
Learning outcomes
On the basis of the literary historical awareness developed, students will be able to interpret and critically reflect on literary works for children in order to work with them in the teaching of literary education. Upon completion of the course, students will be able to formulate and defend evaluative criteria for literary critical assessment of literature for young people and apply them in literary critical and pedagogical practice.
Syllabus
  • Block 1: The problem of triviality in youth literature, model examples from contemporary Czech literature for children and youth. Block 2: Nodal points in the development of Czech literature for children and youth from the 19th century to the mid-20th century (poetry in the 19th century, activities in the field of literature for youth at the beginning of the 20th century, the development of narrative prose and fairy tales). Block 3: The development of literature for children and young people in the second half of the 20th century (the period from 1945 to the end of the normalisation). Block 4: Genre differentiation and syncretism in literature for children and youth after 1989, new development tendencies, change of thematic composition. Block 5: Pictorial narratives in literature for children and youth, their form, function and interpretation.

Teaching methods
Teaching is conducted online in the form of lectures, combining overview explanations, interpretative analyses and introductions to examples of literary works. The lectures are followed by a space for discussion.
Assessment methods
The course concludes with a written exam consisting of answers to open-ended questions on literary history and assigned required readings on the topic. Students are introduced to the topics to be covered in the exam and the criteria for its evaluation at the beginning of the semester.
