Course objectives
The aim of the subject is to present an outline of the development of Czech literature between the years 1918 and 1945.
Learning outcomes
Students will get a deeper insight into the problematic nature of individual literary genres, key personalities, movements and groups, as well as the social context.

  • 1.General characteristics of the years 1918-1938. 2. Literature about the First World War. 3. Poetry between the two wars. 4. Prose between the two wars. 5. Drama and Theatre between the two wars. 6. Literary criticism and periodicals between the two wars. 7. Literature in the Czech lands written in german. 8. General characteristics of the years 1938-1945. 9. Poetry in the period of the German occupation. 10. Prose in the period of the German occupation. 11. Drama and Theatre in the period of the German occupation. 12. Literary criticism and periodicals during the Nazi occupation.

Teaching methods
Students will be able to identify and analyze the style of outstanding personalities of the literary process of the period in question. Students will further develop all their literary knowledge and interpretational skills with the aim to communicate with a literary work more efficiently. They will creatively use their knowledge gained not only in the contact classes but also in their individual study of recommended literature which they will be able to discuss regularly with their teacher.
Assessment methods
Type of course: lecture. Type of completion: credit. Credit requirements: active participation students can be three times absent) and assigned tasks completed individually (text interpretations). The emphasis is put on student´s ability to evaluate a literary work, to compare it in the context of the current Czech and world literary production and to defend their views using precise terminology.
