Course objectives
The aim of the course is to strengthen the overview of current literary events in support of children's reading in the context of Czech and world literature for children and youth. After completing the course, the student is aware of the specificity of the child's recipient and the syncretism with which the child perceives the artistic works.
Learning outcomes
After successful completion of the course, the student is able to choose appropriate literary works for their work with child readers of every age group, and is aware of the specifics of children’s reading. Moreover, the student is familiar with strategies that develop reading, using materials of co-temporary Czech and world children’s and youth literature, and is aware of current events of this specific literature.
Syllabus
  • 1. The characteristics of a child reader, activities for supporting children’s reading, reading related researches. 2. Children’s magazines, specifics of reader’s approaches and the possibilities of working with a magazine text, using materials of co-temporary children’s and youth magazines. 3.‒ 4. Aesthetic and emotional experience in the process of children’s reading, current topics and detabooization in co-temporary children’s and youth literature. 5. Literary awards, contests, polls; professionally awarded literary productions in regards to children’s reading. 6. Overview of current publishing houses and their programs for supporting children’s reading. The course takes place during the shortened semester (6 weeks).

Teaching methods
The course consists of lectures, students are activated through continuous supplementary reports relating to the discussed topic.
Assessment methods
Submitting a written reflection on one of the topics (3-5 pages) based on the lectures and course related literature, or a supplementary report is a condition for receiving credit. Continuous individual reading is expected, using the list of recommended works of fiction for children and youth.
