Course objectives
After completing the course, students should be able to demonstrate knowledge of contemporary Czech stylistics in its syntagmatic and paradigmatic, ie. to explain theory of stylistics and, based on the theory learned, to respect the stylistic and communication standards and explain the dynamics of functional styles.
Syllabus
  • 1. Development of stylistic knowledge in Czech context and the current status. 2. Stylistic differentiation in Czech; objective and subjective/individual style, complex and simplex styles, singular style; functional styles, primary and secondary style . 3. Stylistic value of means of expression, esp. linguistic means the language, style characteristic. 4. Stylistic value, composition value of linguistic and composition means, linguistic means that equal or differentiate style, stylistic competitors. 5. Composition of the text and its structure, stylistic procedures, stylistic forms / genres and their modification in a particular communication. 6. Functional styles and their dynamics. Features various stylistic spheres, blending styles, stylish overlaps / intersections in communication. 7.-10. Characteristics of basic functional styles, styles socially important; their trends. 11. Methods of stylistic research and stylistic analysis of the text. 12. Representatives of Czech stylistics and their contribution to the development of scientific knowledge.

Teaching methods
Lectures. A lecture combined with sebsequent discussions on the specialized issues of the course. The study of literature. Developing research texts, focusing on stylistic issues: a) from selected collections of contemporary linguistic, or b) the selection of linguistic journals. The collection of texts selected style focusing a) significant style charakteristics or b) significant language means.
Assessment methods
Subject is finished by credit. Credit requirements: Written test in the end of the term. The test includes cca 20 short questions focused to elementary language phenomena. To be successfull student has to answer 80 % of them.
