Course objectives
The aim of the subject is to deepen students' theoretical knowledge and their ability to explain stylistic theory, understand it and be able to use it when creating their own text, to create linguistically correct and stylistically refined texts. The goal is also to be able to carry out a stylistic analysis of the text and to understand the specifics of different types of communication situations and functionally differentiated texts.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student will be able to: - practically apply stylistic theory - develop a stylistic analysis of the entered text - interpret the text - perform stylistic and compositional editing of the text - express yourself linguistically correctly and stylistically refined - take into account communication specifics in a linguistically heterogeneous class.
Syllabus
  • 1. Stylistics in the context of linguistic disciplines, especially stylistics and text linguistics, text syntax, pragmatic linguistics, semantics, etc. 2. Style and text – contemporary communication from the aspect of language culture (language culture and specific communication). 3. Stylistic differentiation of language, intersecting bands of functional styles, variability within styles, especially professional/scientific and journalistic styles. 4. Production of substantive text/communication: Preparation and creation of substantive, especially professional, rhetorical and journalistic texts. Procedures in text creation, topic selection and its structuring, hypothesis formulation and processes of analysis and synthesis in professional texts. 5. Selection of thematic, textual/compositional and linguistic means of expression. 6. Working with language material – invention, selection processes, stylization and text composition; modification of the text – thematic, compositional and linguistic; stylistic procedures and stylistic formations and their modifications. 8. Framework components of the text – name/title, notes, bibliographic information, etc. Text models. 9. Reception of a factual text/communication: the meaning of the text and the fulfillment of its goal, the experiential complex of the author of the text and the addressee, understanding of the text and adequate reaction. 10. Factual and artistic texts in the teaching of native speakers and foreign language students; evaluation of students' own creative production - stylistic analysis of the created text. 11. Stylistic and compositional adaptations of other authors' texts - linguistic and stylistic errors and shortcomings. The most common shortcomings of official language communication – working with texts. 12. Spoken and written language/speech.

Teaching methods
Lesson type: seminar - consultations, class discussion. A seminar, active analytical students work in the analysis of texts, active synthetic students work in the interpretation of linguistic phenomena, discussion about the professional course issues. Textual analysis, identification of the language phenomena in the text. Written elaboration and stylistic stylistic analysis (formulation) and compositional modifications entered text. Feedback from students is also taken into account.
Assessment methods
Subject finish: oral exam with the written verification of terminology knowledge and the stylistic evalution of text linguistic means. The content of the written test is given by thematic areas of disciplin comprising 20 teaching tasks. Student must correctly solve 70 % of them. The prerequisite for the students to sit the oral part of the examination is to pass the written test. The prerequisite for access to the final test is the fulfillment of the assigned continuous tasks and tests, including stylistic analysis.
