Course objectives
At the end of this course, the students will be able to orientate in basic academic literature, textbook series, the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, and descriptions of individual levels of language skills; analyze linguistic phenomena with regard mainly to Indo-European language family and comparison with other language families. Attention will be given to teaching Czech language to students with a non-Slavic mother tongue. Students will test their knowledge of topics and terminology not only while reading academic articles and discussing current issues in didactics, but also by doing a demo lesson. Attention will be focused on the teaching of Czech language among pupils with non-Slavic mother tongue.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course students will be able to: 1. to define the basic concepts necessary for the specialized study of the Czech language with a focus on the teaching of the Czech language to non-Slavic mother tongue. 2. to characterize those phenomena that are difficult for pupils with a different mother tongue to learn Czech language with a focus on non-Slavic languages and to understand them. 3. orientate in basic professional literature, textbook series and other aids. 4. control the latest methods and use them in lessons.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction to the field, teaching Czech as a foreign/second language to students with a non-Slavic mother tongue; 2.–3. Language and sociocultural similarities and differences (with regard to Indo-European language family); 4. Teaching Czech language to students with a non-Slavic mother tongue; 5. Integration of students with a different mother tongue into the lesson; cultural framework, taboo, traditions; 6. Principles of didactics, textbook sets; didactic tools; 9. Language analyses; 10. Teaching methods – speaking drills, development of flexibility, controlled conversation, interaction, problem-solving; 11.–12. Practical lesson and its principles, demo lessons.

Seminar, students' active analytical work, discussion about current issues in the field.
Assessment methods
To successfully complete the course the students need to: 1. read the recommended literature; 2. do a demo lesson showing teaching of given grammar issue to students with a non-Slavic mother tongue.
