Course objectives
The seminar offers students to deepen and systematize their professional knowledge in the field of history of literature and visual arts. The main purpose of the seminar is to introduce the relationship between text (or writing) and image as it has developed historically within literature and the visual arts from the earliest period to the present. The main focus of the seminar is on the period from the 1950s to the 1980s. Students will gain an overview of the historical development of writing and the work of key artists straddling the boundaries of literature and the visual arts. In the course of the seminar, students will become familiar with concepts such as Lettrism, conceptual art, visual poetry, etc.
Learning outcomes
Students will gain an overview of the historical development of writing and the work of key authors working at the intersection of literature and the visual arts. The thematization of the relationship between literature and the visual arts will contribute to their better understanding of interdisciplinary connections.
Syllabus
  • 1. Writing and text as part of the development of human and visual communication (historical overview). 2. 1950s-1980s in the Czech Republic and in the world (historical context). 3. Lettrism and its influence on the development of other artistic and literary movements. 4. American art (happening, conceptual art: Art & Language Association, etc.). 5. Art in Czechoslovakia (Actual group, Jiří Valoch, Jiří Hiršal, Bohumila Grögerová, etc.). 6. The turn of the 20th and 21st century: the arrival of new possibilities (focus on the Czech scene). 7. The advent of technology and its influence on the further development of writing/text/communication.

Teaching methods
Students will deepen their knowledge and skills in literary scholarship and critical reflection on visual art through analysis of selected texts. In doing so, they will use the knowledge gained from direct teaching as well as through independent work with recommended literature.
Assessment methods
Active participation in seminars (80%), submission of satisfactory seminar work, active participation in class discussions.
