Course objectives
Main objectives can be summarized as follows: to understand and analyze the acoustic structure of the language (characteristics of the contemporary French pronunciation, styles of pronunciation); to compare the spoken and written speech; to exercize the fonetic transcription. At the end of this course, students should be able to apply the acquiered knowledges and skills at the school.
Syllabus
  • System of French vowels, soft voice beginning, quantity, quality. 2. Nasal vowels. Semivowels. 3. Consonants; sonancy opposite; sonancy of end consonants, consonants assimilation; sonority changes; gemination; division of syllables. 4. Enchainement of vowels and consonants. 5. Liasion of vowels and consonants 6. Rhythmical group and stress; stress function; sentence stress; types of stress. 7. Intonation; intonation function in a French utterance. 8. Transcription; transliteration. 9. Spoken and written language form. 10. Homonyms, homophones, homographs. 11. Listening and reading of coherent texts with emphasising correct division, stress and intonation.

Assessment methods
Type of classwork: consultation. Workshop Ending: examination. Requirements for ending: meet the workshop requirements and the active participation (70%). Test (as a successful test is considered one with at least 70 % right answers) and oral examination.
