Course objectives
The work in the seminar is focused at the acoustic structure of speech (characteristics of French pronunciation, pronunciation styles), comparison of spoken and written utterance. Attention is given to orthography and phonetic transcription. At the end of this course, students should be able to apply the acquiered knowledges and skills at school.
Syllabus
  • 1. Systém of French vowels, soft voice beginning, quantity, quality. 2. Nasal vowels. Semivowels. 3. Consonants; sonancy opposite; sonancy of end consonants, consonants assimilation; sonority changes; gemination; division of syllables. 4. Enchainement of vowels and consonants. 5. Liasion of vowels and consonants 6. Rhythmical group and stress; stress function; sentence stress; types of stress. 7. Intonation; intonation function in a French utterance. 8. Transcription; transliteration. 9. Spoken and written language form. 10. Homonyms, homophones, homographs. 11. Listening and reading of coherent texts with emphasising correct division, stress and intonation.
