Course objectives
The course provides a comprehensive overview of linguistics, adds new aspects to the knowledge acquired in earlier studies (e.g. emphasis on "formulaic language"), and extracts from the individual plans aspects relevant to the language of professional texts. It also introduces the typical linguistic features of different types of professional texts and compares
Learning outcomes
The person who has compelted this course:
- can describe the levels of linguistic structures and their basic units
- can identify the type of text according to its macro and micro features
- distinguish between different functional styles
- can characterise the style of professional texts
- can spot in professional texts language means typical for the given type of text.
Syllabus
  • 1. Linguistics, its subject matter and text/discourse as a basic/input unit
  • 2. Linguistic plans: text, style
  • 3. Language plans: vocabulary
  • 4. Language plans: sentence, word and its forms
  • 5 .Language plans in general: meaning, nonmeaning and suprasegmental units of language, pragmatic elements (abbreviations, symbols, etc.)
  • 6. Style of technical texts and their text types
  • 7. Qualitative (FVG) and quantitative (nominalization...) features of professional texts
  • 8. Types of texts and their comparison (length, difficulty)
  • 9. Chosig a propper texts for a classroom (timelessness)
  • 10. Summary and discussion of the literature
  • 12. Final summary of the course (relevance, difficulty, possibilities for change)
