Course objectives
At the end of this course the student will be able to understand musical structure as specific signs and interpret them from the semiotic perspective.
Syllabus
  • The program of lectures: 1. Relation between aesthetics and theory of art. Art, its classification, specificity of art communication, means of artistic expression. 2. Function, potential and actualized value, changeability of norms. 3. The Development of general, artistic and music semiotics 4. The main kinds of sign: icon, index and symbol; a theory of signs (type, token, interpretant etc.) 5. Art work as a sign system, codes in music and other kinds of art 6. The analysis of art work 7. Art work in time of its technical reproducibility 8. Mass culture in general term 9. The Kitsch as a product of mass culture; problem of advertisement; the midcult. 10. Relationship between art and non-art, commerciality in music. 11. Pragmatic level of semiotics
