Course objectives
The main objective of the course is to develop speaking, reading, writing and listening skills at the Intermediate Level (B1 according to CEFR). The basic study material is the coursebook New English File Intermediate supplemented by various additional materials. Throughout the semester students are encouraged to link theory in the classroom to practice at schools via practical tasks. At the end of the course students should be able to: discuss everyday topics, communicate in everyday situations, read and listen to authentic texts at the Intermediate Level and communicate in the language fluently.

Syllabus
  • The basic study material is the coursebook New English File INTERMEDIATE (Student's book and Workbook), see Literature bellow. The syllabus includes Units 6 and 7, the focus is on speaking and listening activities and development of students' vocabulary.
  • Introduction; Unit 6A - Reported speech: statements, questions and commands
  • Unit 6B - Passive: be + past participle; Cinema
  • Unit 6C - Relative clauses (defining and non-defining), What people do
  • Unit 6 Practical English (Breaking news); Revise and check
  • Unit 7A - Third conditional; Making adjectives and adverbs
  • Unit 7B - Question tags, indirect questions; Compound nouns
  • Unit 7C - Phrasal verbs; Television; Phrasal verbs

Assessment methods
Requirements: Maximum number of points per semester: 200 Pass mark: 140 (part of this sum is also the final written test, students must obtain at least 70% for this final test - if not: two resits of the final test are offered) Written test: 80 points Oral test: 60 points (students gather points that are added to the total sum of points, oral tests do not have resits) Placement test No. 1: 10 points Progress test: 10 points. Other types of continuous assessment: 40 points FURTHER INFORMATION ON POINTS: PROGRESS TEST: 100-95% 10 POINTS 94-85% 9 POINTS 84-75% 8 POINTS 74-70% 7 POINTS LESS THAN 70% 1 POINT
