Course objectives
The aim of the course is to introduce students to the basic developmental tendencies in world literature for children and youth from the second half of the 20th century to the present day through interpretive analyses of the literary works of selected authors.
Learning outcomes
Having passed the course, students are able to characterize contemporary world literature for young adults. They can evaluate and compare the tendencies of the development in world literature and Czech literature. They are able to choose appropriate literary texts for their own teaching practice. They will be able to interpret literary pieces as well as justify and support their views using their knowledge of literary studies.
Syllabus
  • 1.-2. New directions in world literature for children and youth in the second half of the 20th century. 3.-7. Current themes in contemporary children's and young adult literature (themes of death, disability, identity, war, and threats to the home from within and without). 8.-9. Philosophical themes in literature for children and young people. 10. -12. Stories told without words, through images.

Teaching methods
The lecture combines overview passages with interpretative passages and excerpts from literary works.
Assessment methods
Requirements for completion: a written reflection on one of the selected topics in world literature for young people (based on your own reading as well as reading books used at primary school level 1) of three to five pages.
