Course objectives
Having met the course requirements, students will be able to characterize the basic tendencies in the development of literature for children from the 1990s onwards. They will be able to evaluate the contribution of significant personalities in relation to different genres of literature for young adults. They will be able to interpret literary pieces as well as justify and support their views using their knowledge of literary studies.
Learning outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- to characterise basic developmental tendencies of youth literature from the 1990s to the present in the socio-historical context as well as in the context of the development of LPM from its beginnings in the 19th century. century;
- (s)he will be prepared to evaluate the contribution of significant authors in the genres of literature for young people;
- will be able to interpret literary works and defend and support her/his opinions by literary knowledge.
Syllabus
  • 1. The development of poetry for children and young since the beginning till the present, the connection between contemporary creation and traditions of children’s poetry. 2. Children’s hero changes and narrative prose from children’s life since the beginning of children’s literature till the present, a choice of themes depending on social events, current themes, developmental parallels at certain times. 3. A folk tale, an adapted and author’s fairy tale in a child reading, and adaptation of legends. 4. Girl’s heroine prose and its position in a genre system of children’s literature since the beginning till the present, a development continuity and discontinuity, main authors and their concepts of a girl’s world and girl’s heroines. 5. An adventurous prose and its position in a genre system of children’s literature since the beginning till the present, the period and causes of editorial downturn, changes of an adventure aspect, main authors. 6. A literature with historical themes, the changes in its form and function in connection with social events, the issue an adaptation of historical legends (especially the legends of the so-called old Czech legends), an accentuation of specific topics of historical literature connected with Czech history and its important anniversaries. 7. Natural themes in children’s literature, anthropomorphic concept of nature, educational aspects. 8. Pictorial narratives development and children’s book illustration since the beginning of children’s literature till the present, a disruption of book form at the beginning of 21st century, educational aspects of pictorial narratives, a playfulness and an experiment of pictorial narratives, a disruption of the clear recipient categories (pictorial narratives not only for children’s readers). 9. A theoretical concept and a critical reflection of literature for children and young since the beginning till the present. 10. The question of triviality and kitsch in the literature for children and young.
