Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of morphological and physiological conditions in the human organism at the secondary school level is expected. If necessary, it is possible to verify and briefly recall the key moments necessary for understanding (verbal, pictures, diagrams, video projections, PC presentations) before explaining the new substance. After an agreement with the students, the teacher provides them with home preparation for the following lecture. With the help of self-study from the recommended professional and popular scientific literature, the subject matter can be refreshed and better fixed.

Course objectives
The course aims to acquaint students with the circumstances of the child's growth and development, basic pathological conditions and major childhood diseases, their symptoms, etiology, diagnosis, prevention, first aid, and treatment.
The course aims to acquaint the participants with the risks and diseases of childhood, incl. period of prenatal and perinatal development, with options for early prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. Emphasis is placed on early detection of health problems and teamwork of different expertise. Individual pathological situations are discussed in terms of risk factors, etiology, symptoms, development, clinical picture, complications, consequences, and prognosis with information on possible ways of prevention and treatment.

The student knows the basic pathology of the disease and significant child.
The student is able to provide first aid.
The student is acquainted with prevention.
After completing the course, the student will be able to understand the basics of pediatric examination and medical history, to know the basic concepts of the field, symptoms, treatment, and prevention of disease states that may be encountered in the school environment. Students will also learn the basics of genetics, infectology, epidemiology and lay first aid.

  • Health, its definition, influencing factors, prevention, protection, and health promotion.
  • Basic knowledge of human genetics, genotype disorders, genetic disease diagnostics.
  • Risk newborn, definition, causes, prevention, treatment.
  • The most common diseases threatening the newborn, pre-, peri- and post-natal complications.
  • Neonatal jaundice - definition, importance, etiology, therapy.
  • Growth and development of the child, its standards and failure.
  • The period of childhood, their characteristics, outstanding health and social risks, protection options.
  • Disorders of energy metabolism, diabetes, endocrine-mediated disorders.
  • Frequently respiratory disease - general principles, types, processes, risks, prevention, and treatment.
  • The most common diseases of the digestive tract - general principles, types, processes, risks, prevention, and treatment.
  • Heart disease and circulatory disease, blood - overview, diagnosis, prevention, treatment.
  • Cancer - overview, diagnosis, prevention, treatment.
  • Immunity, its functions, and disorders, allergies - etiology, types, disease states, diagnosis, therapy, and prevention.
  • Diseases of the excretory system - signs of significant pathology, therapy, and prevention.
  • Children's injuries and poisoning risks, first aid, therapy, prevention.
  • The importance of family for the child, pediatric aspects of foster care.
  • Syndrome CAN, basic types of social pathologies, their early detection, and prevention.

Teaching methods
Theoretical preparation of the recommended printed and electronic information resources. Feedback - students can ask questions during the lectures, comments, suggestions for discussion. If necessary, it is possible to further discuss these suggestions in teachers consultation hours.
Assessment methods
To pass the course is required a written test of 60 questions based on the syllabus. The answers are offered in a closed form, the correct answer is just one of several listed. A student must achieve at least 40 correct answers. In case of disagreement from the student side, or other obstacles to accomplish in writing form, there is a possibility to test verbally. The teacher enters the listener 3 questions based on the syllabus permit him written preparation.
