Prerequisites
Students enrolling in the course are expected to achieve at least a good pre-intermediate level of English (= Level B1 of the CEFR). The pre-intermediate student (B1) understands the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters, can enter unprepared into conversation about familiar topics and connects ideas in a simple way. He or she can also provide information, take messages, give simple instructions and deal with less routine problems, e.g. complaints. Can describe events, experiences, hopes and ambitions; give reasons, explanations of plans and opinions.

Course objectives
The aim of this B2 level course is to consolidate language knowledge and skills acquired in the Bachelor's English language course (level B1), acquire additional special needs education terminology and enhance academic skills within level B2 of the CEFR by means of up-to-date special needs education topics and issues (reading and listening comprehension; speaking; formal writing). In terms of academic skills, the focus is mainly on presentation skills and expressing specialist opinion. Students will also be required to show their command of level B2 grammar.
Learning outcomes
By the end of the course, the student will be able to: understand spoken LSP texts at B1+ to B2 level of the CEFR; understand written LSP texts at B1+ to B2 level of the CEFR; produce a short report on an issue related to special needs education; successfully participate in a spoken interaction dealing with SN issues at B1+ to B2 level of the CEFR; use specialist terminology; show a good command of selected grammar structures at B1+ to B2 level of the CEFR.
Syllabus
  • Session 1: Course introduction. General problems in schools ADHD; Listening, Writing a report, Giving feedback. Session 2: Speech disorders; Reading, How to summarize, How to describe experience. Session 3: Autism, Specific learning difficulties; Abstract, How to give instructions, How to ask questions. Session 4: Physical and sensory impairments; Working with vocabulary (collocations), Sharing good practice Session 5: Sharing good practice, Revision.

Teaching methods
Task based seminars designed for teaching English for specific and academic purposes (activities developing students' language skills plus grammar and vocabulary knowledge at level B2: independent reading, listening and writing tasks; class discussions and presentations; etc.).
Assessment methods
Level B2 language course. Credit requirements: 1) Attendance and active participation in the sessions (two absences due to serious reasons are acceptable). 2) Completed in-term tasks (MA thesis abstract, report, presentation, sharing good practice group activity, glossary) 3) Meeting deadlines. 4) Final oral exam
