Course objectives
The aim of this course is to help students achieve B1 level knowledge of English within a social working context by improving all language skills (listening, reading, speaking, writing) and systems of the language (grammar and vocabulary) within B1 level of CEFR.
Learning outcomes
By the end of the course, the student will be able to:
  • understand spoken and written English about social education topics at B1 level of the CEFR;
  • communicate in English about social issues and childhood and teenage development issues at B1 level of the CEFR;
  • give an oral presentation in English on a specialist social education topic;
  • use selected social education terminology with natural and sophisticated control;
  • show a good command of selected grammar structures at B1 level of the CEFR;
    • Syllabus
    • The multidisciplinary focus of social education is reflected in the topic-based orientation of the individual courses taught at the Faculty of Education. The topics in this course (a combination of Courses A and B) have been chosen to reflect the social and legal dimension of social education. Course topics include:
    • education systems
    • Being a social educator
    • Dealing with social issues regarding:
    • - children
    • - teenagers
    • - adults
    • - elderly
    • Working a social case study in English

    Teaching methods
    There are four or five class sessions during the semester for which students are expected to prepare for beforehand by reading, writing and research activities, as well as grammar exercises at B1 level.

    4-5 class sessions during the semester, activities and tasks developing students' language skills and competencies, class and group discussions, vocabulary practice, mind mapping, opinion and information sharing, giving arguments, etc.
    Each class has an assignment to hand in with all assignments modified according to teacher feedback and collected together to form a final portfolio for assessment.
    Assessment methods
    Course completion requirements:
    1) Attendance and active participation in the consultations, all coursework must be completed including any catch-up work for a missed class.
    2) Submitting portfolio assignments in due time (specified by course instructor)
    3) Oral defence of the portfolio during the exam period (presenting the portfolio and answering questions about your learning and thinking when making the portfolio)

    Information on completion of the course: Pro úspěšné ukončení předmětu jsou předepsány v semestru průběžné úkoly. V případě nápadných rozdílů mezi úrovní odevzdaných úkolů a výkony studenta/-ky ve výuce může dojít k přezkoušení. Kurz je ukončen zkouškou na úrovni B1.
    The course is taught annually.
    General note: Zápis vyžaduje úspěšné absolvování vstupního testu JVk001/JV001 (obvykle v lednu). Výuka probíhá v angličtině. Kurz je ukončen písemnou a ústní zkouškou na úrovni B1.

    Online activities of reading, writing, listening along with quizzes and games are the preparation work for the classroom sessions.

    Classroom sessions include completing projects in teams which use and practice the language already learnt from the online preparation activities.
