Course objectives

The aim of the course English for Special Educators A (and the following B part) is to develop and consolidate students' language skills and help them to reach the B1 level in listening, reading, speaking, and writing. During the course, students will revise and practice relevant grammar structures and become familiar with the basics of specialist vocabulary from general and special needs education. A big part of the course is raising students' awareness of autonomous learning methods and empowering them to reflect on and direct their language-learning process. Another course objective is the development of academic skills in English, such as formal writing, oral presentation, discussion and argumentation, and the critical assessment of information sources.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, the students will be able to: understand specialist vocabulary connected to the topic of education and their field of study at B1 level of the CEFR; introduce themselves/their field of study/professional goals; share their ideas and discuss different issues associated with the topic of education; show a good command of selected grammar structures at B1 level of the CEFR

Teaching methods

90-minute seminars, activities and tasks developing students' language skills and competencies, class and group discussions, grammar and vocabulary practice, mind mapping, presentation and soft skills practice, opinion and information sharing, etc.

Assessment methods

Credit requirements: 1) Active participation in lessons and careful home preparation for each lesson + attendance (2 absences allowed) 2) Language Learning Reflection + consultation with the teacher 3) Grammar ROPOTs 4) CV 5) Formal email 6) Presentation 7) Video/podcast summary + peer review 8) Vocabulary collection Students can receive a maximum of 100 points for all the tasks. They will need at least 65 points to pass the course. Only students who have completed all requirements (including active participation and attendance) during the semester will receive credit for the course.
