Course objectives
The aim is to get the attandants acquainted with the basics of semantic structure of a sentence. The starting point are acts and states of extralinguistic reality that are caught in a certain set of language contents. The attention is devoted to a lexical-semantic characteriaztion of predicates and typology of valence supplements which is determined by sentence-semantic functions and denotative semantics on the level of actants. With the help of distinctive signs the verb division marking activities and processes is done. Practical application of valence theory is demonstrated on the example of description of prefixed verbs in contemporary German and on the example of valence description of verbs from diachronic point of view in an old upper German.
