Prerequisites
The course is part of the Bavarian Studies BAVARICVM offered within adult educational program. Attending the course requires the inscription into the BAVARICVM program. In addition, the course is open to all students of the Masaryk University who have the necessary language skills to follow the lectures (classes are taught in German).
Course Enrolment Limitations
The course is offered to students of any study field.
Course objectives
The main purpose of the course is to give a survey of the economical, social and political facts of Bavaria. At the end of the semester, students should be able
- to name the most important characteristics of modern Bavarian society (concerning economy, political organization and social structure),
- to describe the possibilities of Bavaria to influence decision making within the federal system,
- to relate information given in contemporary texts (e.g. in the media) to the appropriate social and political background,
- to understand the most common vocabulary in texts on Bavarian politics and society (receptive skills) and to express themselves in written and spoken form on topics of public interest in an appropriate manner (productive skills).

  • - Geographical basics of Bavaria,
  • - Economic structure and important economic indicators,
  • - Social structure of Bavaria after World War II,
  • - Political system (the Bavarian Constitution, political constituencies and personalities, electoral system, decision making),
  • - Comparison of the political system of Bavaria and the Czech Republic,
  • - Administrative system,
  • - Court systems and general laws,
  • - Discussion of federal systems and its application to Bavarian.

Teaching methods
Lectures and students’ presentations; class discussion.
Assessment methods
Students of the BAVARICVM have to pass an oral exam at the end of the semester. In addition, all attendants of the course have to prepare a short presentation during the semester. Students of the Masaryk University who are not registered with the BAVARICVM can attend the course as a facultative class (“c”) and acquire (on the basis of their presentation, alternatively on the basis of a short paper) credits (“zapocet”).
