Course objectives

The lecture is divided into three sections - literature up to 1945, post-war literature up to 1989 and contemporary literature. In each section, the literary development is presented against the cultural, political and social background. The aim of the lecture is to bring to the fore the literary image of those phenomena which occurred repeatedly in the course of the century or whose literary treatment spanned several epochs (war, a contrasting view of the literary treatment of totality in both the National Socialist and Communist regimes, the Holocaust, migration, etc.).

Learning outcomes

Students will be able to discuss the three areas of literature up to 1945, post-war literature up to 1989 and contemporary literature and present literary developments against a cultural, political and social background.

Syllabus

• The time around the turn of the century 1900. The breakthrough of modernism. Expressionism, its precursors. Literature of the interwar period, New Objectivity. Literature during the Nazi regime. Literature immediately after the Second World War. Literature in the fifties. The social situation, development trends and conflicts of the sixties to eighties of the 20th century. Literature from the fall of communism to the present day.
