Course objectives
The aim of the course is to provide a basic overview of current topics in media and communication studies with a focus on applicability to pedagogical practice. The course introduces basic concepts and theories and basic approaches to analysing medial sources. The course builds the foundation necessary to read and produce media texts critically and in an informed manner, both in traditional media and new media production.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, students can critically evaluate media messages and subject them to basic analysis and interpretation linked to basic methodological procedures.
Syllabus
  • Topic 1: Introduction to Media Theory: introduction to what is communication, what is media; understanding the difference between types of media and the principles of public service Topic 2: The Social Role of Media: understanding the connection between the development of media and modern society, their role in society: The role of media in cultural, social and political spheres; propaganda and ideology Topic 3: Moral panics, disinformation and their forms. topic 4: Creation of meaning: The content is related to the topic "The social role of the media" and elaborates on the concept of popular culture and its connotations: forms of signification and political representation in popular culture. Topic 5: Media and the study of materiality and technology: to explain the material interconnectedness of media with the world, how its physical nature (components, shape, possibilities) affects the world, both from a global perspective and from the perspective of individual users Theme 6: Children, young people and media: the role of media in the process of socialisation; introduces current research in this field, modes of media use, etc. Topic 7: Media and the law: Basic information on the legal framework and legal relations within the media field; copyright.
