Course objectives
This course aims at the students' improvement of their reading skills of academic texts in English, and their abilities to argue about these texts in an academic way. It prepares the students to pronounce and defend their opinions in an English academic environment. It concentrates on both cooperation and competition.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this course students should be able to - speak fluently about a given scientific topic in English - work with English academic materials - substantively argue on the issues in English - be able to cooperate within a team on academic topics
Syllabus
  • The first lesson is introductory, in the following 11 lessons the students will analyze and discuss F.D.Roosevelt, John Locke, Edward W. Said, Mary Wollstonecraft, Rolland Barthes, Adam Smith, Charles Darwin, Adorno and Horkheimer, Sigmund Freud, Aristotle, and the US Constitution. Therefore, the students will discuss topics of philosophy, economics, politics, woman rights, (post)colonialism, art and literature, or society.

  • Course resources depend on the actual teacher (according to course content).
Teaching methods
Home reading of given texts, discussion of the texts in the class - both in pairs and as a group, presentations on given topics.
Assessment methods
To receive credits from this subject, the students are expected to attend the classes (students are allowed to miss 2 classes), to ACTIVELY participate in the discussions of the texts and given topics, and to have a 20-minute presentation on the given topic.
