Course objectives
The course familiarizes students to the problems of Russian orthography and to the problems related to the use of hard and soft signs (ъ, ь), letters ж, ш, щ, ц, and the vowels in the roots of Russian words.
Learning outcomes
By the end of this course, students will have an overview of the rules of Russian orthography and they will be able to apply their knowledge in practice, they will be able to work with spelling dictionaries of Russian language and Russian spelling handbooks.
Syllabus
  • 1 – 2. Using и/ы, а/я, у/ю after the hushing sounds ж, ш, щ, ц.
  • 3 – 5. Writing о/ё after the hushing sounds ё ж, ш, щ, ц.
  • 6. The use of the soft sign to indicate softness.
  • 7. The use of the soft sign to distinguish the grammatical forms of the words.
  • 8. The use of the hard sign.
  • 9. Writing и/ы after the prefixes.
  • 10 -11. Alteration of vowels in the roots of the words.
  • 12. Revision exercises.

Teaching methods
Homework; theoretical preparation; reading and listening to texts in Russian, translation and spelling exercises.
Assessment methods
Credit is awarded on the basis of work with ROPOTs (it is necessary to work out all ROPOTs according to the assignment, the student has 3 attempts for each ROPOT, the one with a success rate of at least 75% is considered correctly).
Regular preparation and fulfillment of assigned tasks based on the acquired theoretical material and professional terminology.
