Course objectives
The aim of the course is to acquaint students with the basic aspects of the word, its functioning within the linguistic system, its role and functions in individual language levels.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this course, the student will be able to: - characterize the basic concepts of lexicology, - know the basic scientific disciplines and the subject of study of lexicology, - know the characteristics of a word, its origin and changes in meaning, - know the current trends in the development of the vocabulary of Russian and the tendency to adopt words from foreign languages.
Syllabus
  • 1. The word as the basic unit of language.
  • 2. Lexicography.
  • 3-5. Types of lexis according to selected criteria. Archaisms, neologisms, barbarisms, exoticisms, etc.
  • 6. Calques.
  • 7. Original and adopted words.
  • 8. Adaptations from Slavic languages. Old Slavonic.
  • 9. Adaptations from non-Slavic languages. English words in contemporary Russian.
  • 10. History of the development of Russian vocabulary.
  • 11. Vocabulary changes in the Soviet period.
  • 12. Word formation in terms of changes in word meaning. Prefixes, suffixes.
