Previous completion of the course Russian History, Culture and Civilization 1 and parallel enrolment in Russian History, Culture and Civilization 2 (or analogous courses), or a basic understanding of the culture and history of Russia.

Course objectives
The aim of the course is to deepen the topics, which are the subject of the courses Russian History, Culture and Civilization 1 and Russian History, Culture and Civilization 2, particularly with a focus on the comparative aspect within the European area. Emphasis is placed on searching specialized literature and other sources and citing them correctly during the creation of a bibliography, as well as on excerpting of information and correct dealing with it.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course the student will be able to:
- identify and summarize important features of Russian history and culture (focusing on selected periods);
- link knowledge of history and realities and perceive them as a whole;
- compare and highlight differences/parallels when comparing East Slavic and West Slavic culture and history.

  • Basic topics (a list of specific topics will be included in the study materials, the connection between historical and cultural themes is variable):
  • 1. Slavs. Kievan Rus: formation and emergence. Christianization. / Religion in the RF.
  • 2. The rise and fall of Kievan Rus. / The development of fine art. Icons and iconographers.
  • 3. The domination of the Golden Horde over Russia. / Folk music and musical folklore. Musical instruments in folk music.
  • 4. Rise of Moscow Russia. / Applied arts.
  • 5. Ivan IV. Terrible and the context of the 16th century. / State structure and political system of the Russian Federation.
  • 6. Boris Godunov and the period of "smuta". / Geographical overview. Natural monuments.
  • 7. The first Romanovs and the first half of the 17th century. / Inhabitants and peoples of the RF.
  • 8. Romanovs and the second half of the 17th century. / Economy.

Teaching methods
Self-study and ongoing consultation with the teacher. Finding and excerpting information from literature, journalistic sources, historical and documentary films, etc. Reading. Abstract writing and project work.
Assessment methods
Making a project in the form of a poster/presentation on the chosen topic (including a preliminary outline and abstract with bibliography) and presenting it in the faculty at the end of the semester.
