Course objectives
Subject of old Russian literature and folklore includes not only an overview of the Russian oral literature, its genre specifics, but also elementary overview of the theoretical base of folklore. Attention is also paid to the formation of literature and to the oldest Russian literature and its development until the late 18th century. At the end of the course students understand key issues of Russian folklore, so-called old Russian literature and culture, also literature of the 18th century and their periodization; they understand Russian literary development, periodization and its specifics; understand the relationship of folklore, literature and other art forms, relationship among styles, movements and genres in their historical evolution; they understand terminology in specificities and inaccuracies, terminological labeling of East oldest literature; they are familiar with the basic plot, poetry, history and interpretation of the outstanding works of the so-called old Russian literature and literature of the 18th century; they are able to characterize the different degrees in the literary and cultural development, the differences between them and the specifics of each epoch and guidelines; they use the correct terminology in the genre and its historical development; they can give specific examples to various genres and tendencies.

  • Definition of so-called old Russian literature and literature of the 18th century, their periodization and specifics
  • The emergence of so-called old Russian literature. Literature of Kievan Rus
  • Literature in the period of feudal fragmentation and fight with Mongol Empire
  • Literature of centralized Russian state (from late 15th to 16th centuriy)
  • The literature of the 17th and 18th century

Teaching methods
The subject will be taught in the form of tutorials.
Assessment methods
Students work with electronic support and materials in IS, obligatory and recommended literature. Essay on selected, consulted topic is submitted to the teacher by the end of the semester.
