Course objectives
The main aim of the course is to acquaint students with the formal scientific style and the genres connected with it. Students are encouraged to use lexical and stylistic means of academic style, expand and consolidate the relevant vocabulary and professional terminology, learn about the specialities of the academic style in Russian and at the same time they can analyze the lexical-semantic texts. They also control the citation and paraphrase of the literature used.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction to academic writing: basic features of academic style, academic writing pitfalls, recommendations for practice. 2. Methodology of science. An overview of basic methodological approaches. Basic scientific terminology in Russian language. 3.-4. Genres of academic style, their characters and usage. 5.-6.. Lexical and grammatical coherence of text. Meaning of connectors and subheadings. Specifics of Fall Bindings. 7. Punctuation and its pitfalls. 8.-9. Academic style vocabulary, its features, structure and practical use. 10.-11. Academic style syntax. 12. Citation and Paraphrase in Academic Text - Principles and Rules.
