Course objectives
At the end of this course, students should be able to: - understand and to interpret the laws of human growth and development (examples and its explanation) - understand and interpret Haeckel's Biogenetic Law, rudiment and atavism – concepts - expalin the dangers of mutagens, teratogens and carcinogens, especially for girls and pregnant women - interpret expertly dangers of drug abuse - interpret service principles in prenatal care and assisted reproduction technologies
Syllabus
  • Phylogenesis: Homo sapiens phylogenesis. – I: hominization, sapientation, rudiments, atavisms – assembling of comparative schemes of different evolutional stages, discussion. Homo sapiens phylogenesis. – II: assembling of comparative schemes of different evolutional stages, discussion Ontogenesis: Gametogenesis. Fertilisation and human prenatal period. Basics of prenatal diagnostics. Childbirth. Assisted reproduction – test-tube children. Teratology. Somatometry. Secular trend and acceleration. The skull of embryo, fetus, infant, the skull of pre-school child, adult, age determination according to skull, sex differences. Pelvic girdle, sex differences. Human backbone in the course of ontogenesis. Information about modern educational programmes related to human phylogenesis and ontogenesis problems.

Teaching methods
Projects are focused on human phylogeny and ontogeny - prenatal period and early childhood period especially. Specific health hazards during ontogeny. Special video previews are also included – especially video programmes from assisted reproduction centres and prenatal clinics.
Assessment methods
Credit. At the end of this course, students complete a written test consisting of 50 questions. If they answer 35 questions correctly, they pass the test. After evaluation, a discussion follows in which the correct answers of previously asked questions are repeated and explained again.
