Course objectives
At the end of this course, students should be able to: -- explain basic genetics terms, Mendel´s and Morgan´s laws and basics of cytogenetics. -- explain general principles of heredity and processing of living organisms, occuring both at unicellular organisms and multicellular organisms. -- learn that the process of passing hereditary predispositions during the sexual reproduction process is a source of the variability of all diplonts´ traits. A student explains this fact on examples chosen on his/her own. --apply the genetics of organisms to genetics of populations and is able to emphasize the specifics of human traits heredity and the issue of human genome.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction: historical development and origin of genetics as a scientific discipline (importance of J. G. Mendel), current development and importance of genetics. Model objects in genetics. 2. Basic genetic terminology and principles of heredity, variability, gene, allele and their mutual relations, genotype, phenotype, genome, gene pool, allelia multipla. 3. Basics of cytogenetics – I. chromosome structure and importance, chromosomal determination of sex, chromosomal abnormalities. 4. Basics of cytogenetics – II. mitosis and meiosis course. Mutations – classification, detection, causes, consequences. 5. Basics genetic laws – I. Mendel’s phenotype laws and their deviations, hybridism – monohybridism, dihybridism, polyhybridism. Backcross, reciprocal cross. 6. Basic genetic laws – II. Mendel’s genotypic laws, causes of exceptions (i.e. theoretical sex ratio failures). 7. Morgan’s laws. Genetic bond – genetic mapping, hypothesis of crossing over mechanism, genetic interactions. 8. Heredity of quantitative attributes of man. Heredity of intelligence, talent. 9. Genetics of populations – I. panmictic population and autogamous population – characteristics. Hardy-Weinberg’s law. 10. Genetics of populations – II. selection, mutation, populations structure – genetic drift, migration.

Teaching methods
Theoretical preparation – lectures supported by chosen extracts from special video programmes. The topic of each lecture and recommended literature will be provided one week in advance. Each lecture will be finished by its revisionm, through colloquy students will discuss new terms and context which were presented and explained during the lecture.
Assessment methods
The whole course is finished by an oral exam consisting of two parts: a) practical part – a student solves and defends a particular genetic model example which he/she has selected from a topic list of 95 items, b) theoretical part– a student answers and explains two theoretical topics from general genetics which he/she has selected from 40 double topics list.
