Course objectives
The aim of the course is to develop theoretical knowledge and practical skills of students in the field of activation of people with mental health problems. Key student outcomes in the seminar include:
- ability to design and develop a proposal for a short activation programme (based on current scientific knowledge) - lead the programme and reflect on the outcomes of the programme for the target group
- produce a report on the programme
. What will you get out of this?
You will gain experience of meeting people who have mental health problems, insight into the work of a multidisciplinary team and test your ability to support the recovery of people with mental health problems.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:
- connect theoretical knowledge in the field of mental health with the practical concept of an activation program,
- orientate in the basic modern concepts supporting the improvement of mental health of people with mental health problems,
- orientate themselves in the possibilities of using social pedagogy in the field of support for people with mental health problems,
- understand the importance of multidisciplinary collaboration in the field of mental health - demonstrate the ability to design an appropriate programme design for different parts of the target group of people with mental health problems (children, adolescents, people with a chronic course of mental illness, street people with mental health problems), etc.
Syllabus
  • The actual content of the course is based on practical work with the client during the whole semester (2h/week). The actual practical work is preceded by an intensive block theoretical course (according to fixed deadlines set by the teacher in the partner organisation Práh). A reflective block and a final colloquium are also included.
  • The subject of the theoretical course will be in particular:
  • - Manifestations of mental disorders in children, adolescents and serious mental illness,
  • - Quality of life and the recovery process,
  • - opportunities for supporting people with mental health problems in multidisciplinary collaboration,
  • - activation of people with mental health problems, - the necessary competences for working with people with mental health problems,
  • - development and implementation of an activation programme,
  • - implementation of the programme with people with mental health problems,
  • - reflection on the programme during its implementation and final reflection after its completion.
  • Description of practical activities:
  • On the basis of theoretical knowledge and their practical skills, learners will develop a proposal for an activation programme. They will send the draft programme to the teacher, receive feedback, and modify it if necessary according to the feedback. The programme includes at least 10 hours of practical activity and is based on professional modern concepts in the field of mental health. The programme has a presumed goal, which the learner verifies during implementation, using certain evidence-based methods. The program design has an implementation framework - what, who, when, where and how.
  • Program implementation
  • Learners implement the programme, take notes on the implementation, reflect on the findings during individual consultations. They create a final evaluation of the programme - what they achieved, why they achieved it, what helped them in the implementation, what were the limitations of the programme.
  • Group reflection on the programme
  • Learners reflect on the conclusions generated together during the final group meeting.
