Course objectives
The aim of the course is to acquaint students with interventions in children with identifiable risk of speech and language skills and potentially at risk children. At the end of the course the student will know the methods of intervention in the period of unintentional and intentional communication, will be acquainted with the possibilities of evaluation of feeding and oral abilities in various stages of development and will be able to explain the specifics of therapy in feeding and oral abilities. As part of an early speech therapy intervention, students will be introduced to teaching materials in the form of video recordings reflecting specific topics: Support for mother-child communication in the neonatal ICU or intermediate care unit; Kangaroo; Evaluation of oral reflexes; Breastfeeding - mom-baby interaction; Alternative feeding methods; Newborn conditions; Interactive reading. The student will also be familiar with the evaluation of auditory perception of early children and the need for visual support in the development of functional communication. Learning outcomes
The student is oriented in categorizing children with identifiable risk and potentially identifiable risk in the development of communication skills; Controls the specifics of language development and language skills at an early age; orientates in intervention in children during periods of unintentional and intentional communication; can think about the possibilities of intervention in children at an early age, including children at high risk. Student is able to evaluate the child's response to sound and knows the instruments of assessing the hearing perception in early age. The student is oriented in the developing of functional communication - the use of visually motor communication systems in the deaf or the use of auditory verbal method in children with residual hearing.
Syllabus
  • Definition of early speechopedic intervention, situation abroad and the Czech Republic. The range of early intervention speech children - children with identifiable risk and potentially identifiable risk of developing communication skills. Contemporary Aspects of Speech Ontogeny and Language Skills. Oral reflexes. Orofacial therapy. Senzomotoric stimulation. Diagnostic procedures and materials, differentiation by age and difficulty. The specifics of collecting and analyzing anamnestic data at an early age. Model of interdisciplinary cooperation. Therapeutic procedures and materials applied in our and foreign practice. Interventions focused on parent-child interaction. Analysis of case studies - diagnostic procedures. Analysis of case studies - therapeutic procedures.

Assessment methods
Oral exam. The student will prepare a seminar paper reflecting the theme of early speechopedic intervention in both Czech and foreign literature in the range of about 2-3 pages of A4 format. Debate over selected topics.
