Course objectives
After completion of this course the student will be able to define specifics of care for persons with hearing impairment from birth to end of life. The student will deepen knowledge and will be able to focus on possibilities of diagnostics of hearing loss; will be able to give details of typical deviations (abnormalities ) in language development of people with hearing impairment; will be able to rationalize difficulties in reading comprehension of persons with hearing impairment and to know specifics of writing skills of them; will focus on possibilities of compensation of hearing loss and specify hearing aids used by the people with the handicap. Learning outcomes of the course unit is to acquaint students with the system of counseling: school counseling and school counseling facilities: special education centers, psychological counseling centers, educational care centers. Personnel occupation, standards of activity. Counseling for parents and children with disabilities in early age, early intervention, early-day care centers care; early intervention. Use of Czech sign language in communication with a deaf child. Health consultancy, speech therapy outpatient clinics. Legislative measures to deal with counseling.
Syllabus
  • Definition of basic concepts of surdopedy, historical development of care for deaf persons, anatomy and physiology of the auditory system, etiology of auditory defects, consequences of auditory defects and psychological particularities of persons with hearing impairment, language competencies of people with hearing impairment, communication forms, speech therapy of a person with auditory disabilities, hearing prostheses and compensatory aids.Teamwork for comprehensive diagnostic examination of auditory defects and interdisciplinary relationships. Classification of defects and hearing disorders. Definition of a counseling system for individuals with special educational needs in the Czech Republic. Legislative conditions for the provision of advisory services. Early Care Centers for children with hearing impairment - Activities and staffing. Specially Educational Centers for children with hearing impairment - Activity and Personnel Occupation. Pre-occupational and professional preparation of pupils with hearing impairment. Support for the employment of people with hearing impairment. Professional counseling. Hearing impairment in adulthood and in old age. Tinnitus. Hearing defect and other associated disabilities.
