Course objectives
The aim of the course is to introduce the most commonly used research strategies in special education, focusing on research of one or small number of research subjects and its use in bachelor thesis. Due to the inter-individual differences between subjects commonly associated with heterogeneity and/or small number of available research subjects, special education research often uses qualitative, mixed or quantitative strategies with small number of informants, respondents or research subjects. The course will introduce the basic requirements for conducting case studies, action research and within subject experiments with a small number or one research subject.
Learning outcomes
Students will understand the possibilities of single or small sample research strategies. They will be able to explain advantages and disadvantages of small N research studies. They will be able to choose suitable research stratégy and prepare a bachelor thesis research project using selected small N research strategies.
Syllabus
  • 1. Research with small number of subjects or with one subject (N1) – possibilities and limits of use 2. Using N1 research strategies in qualitative research studies 3. Using N1 research strategies in quantitative research studies 4. Using N1 mixed methods research studies 5. Case studies – project preparation, selection of human subjects, phenomena or institutions; data collection; 6. Case studies – data analysis; interpetation of results; possibilities of generalization; writing down and publishing case study results. 7. Action research with small N 8.
