Course objectives
The aim of the course is to introduce students to the field of andragogy and special andragogy, including them in the historical, social and scientific context. Emphasis is placed on understanding basic categories such as adulthood, adult education, mobilization of human capital and quality of life. Specifically, the course focuses on various aspects of life of adults with disabilities and social disadvantages, explain development in approaches to people with disabilities and disadvantages regarding inclusion to the labour market and social inclusion.
This course focuses on people in young and middle adulthood. Furthermore, the course offers space for particular concepts, principles and risks associated with helping professions and current trends in the Czech Republic and abroad.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course the student will be able to:
- describe selected educational theories regarding adult education;
- explain fundamental terms and concepts from the field of adult education and adult education of persons with disabilities;
- explain specific aspects of education of adults and compare/contrast these with education of children and adolescents;
- describe factors influencing life of adult people with disabilities or social disadvantages in the Czech Republic (including comparison with foreign countries);
- explain fundamentals of the complex approach to people with disabilities and interconnections among particular fields, resorts and areas;
- be familiar with organizations supporting adults with disabilities;
- interprete information form Czech and foreign sources;
- understand specific aspects of concepts focusing on support of adult people with disabilities, disadvantage including persons with acquired disabities.

  • defining the key concepts of andragogy
  • object of andragogy - adult person, personality specifications and types of adult learning
  • andragogical profession, personal prerequisites and demands in education and intervention in adults
  • aims of adult education; motivation to education in adulthood
  • definition of handicap and disability, terminology according to WHO, changes of approach
  • basic introduction to some target groups: a person with intellectual disability, autism, physical disability, mental illness and possibilities of their support
  • social services, legislation, personal assistance, care allowance
  • vocational training, choosing the occupation, transition from school to work
  • employment of people with disabilities, supported employment
  • support services for people with disabilities
  • competencies of workers in helping professions, helpers syndrome
  • care and support of people after brain trauma
