Course objectives
The basic objectives of the course is to build on the previous knowledge of the structure and function of the human body, present an overview of basic communicable diseases as well as important non-communicable diseases of mass occurrence in childhood (heart and vascular diseases, cancer, diabetes, allergy), basics of pathopsychology, epidemiology, hygiene, prevention, and first aid. The course presents synthetic information from the field of theoretical, pre-clinical as well as clinical medical disciplines adapted to the needs of the students of the Faculty of Education. These findings are combined with the principles of good educational practice and applied in the preschool period with an emphasis on the teacher’s independent and responsible decision making in case a child’s health or life is at risk and on communication with other specialists in the team that takes care of the child. An emphasis is on the holistic approach to health and timely recognition of any disorders, preventive measures, hygiene in the educational process, cooperation with other specialists in the interest of the child, reducing the risks associated with the child’s stay in a preschool facility.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course the students will:
have an idea about the anatomy and physiology of the human body as a whole and of individual body systems;
they will understand selected communicable and non-communicable pathological processes,
they will understand the significance of preventive measures,
be able to apply these measures, and provide general first aid.
Syllabus
  • Syllabus of lectures: 1. Basic terminology, definition of the field, health and its determinants.
  • 2. Child and the environment, inheritance, living conditions, environmental factors.
  • 3. Ontogenetic development.
  • 4. - 6. Anatomy and physiology of the human body.
  • 7. Fundamentals of general infectology, epidemiological chain.
  • 8. Diseases transmitted by air, water and food, blood, protozoa, worms, arthropods.
  • 9. Immunological minimum, immunity disorders, vaccination, vaccination calendar.
  • 10. -11. Mass non-communicable diseases, risk factor system.
  • 12. Energy and biological value of food, essential nutrients, fluid intake, risk and protective factors.
  • Syllabus of seminars: 1. First aid in case of unconsciousness and resuscitation.
  • 2. Diabetes mellitus – occurrence, etiology, type I and II, risk and protective factors, treatment and prevention, first aid.
  • 3. Allergic diseases – occurrence, etiology, types, risk and protective factors, treatment and prevention, first aid.
  • 4. Epilepsy – occurrence, etiology, first aid.
  • 5. Childhood neuroses, cerebral palsy, mild brain dysfunction.
  • 6. Child injuries, risk periods in childhood, injury prevention and first aid.
  • 7. Burns, prevention and first aid.
  • 8. Frostbite, heatstroke, sunstroke, acute fever.
  • 9. Poisoning and acid burning.
  • 10. First aid kit. Content of first aid kit and functions.
  • 11. On-site procedure.
  • 12. Frequent childhood diseases.
  • 13. During their teaching experience, the students will learn about the book of injuries and will perform its analysis. They will analyse a topic on first aid in terms of didactic principles and use these principles in a practical environment.

Teaching methods
Cycle of theoretical lectures including relevant videos. Training of first aid.
Assessment methods
The final assessment will be test and an oral exam – the students will draw questions to be answered and explained.
