Course objectives
The course aims to raise students‘ awareness and sensitivity to specific aspects of (namely written) communication in the professional community. In this course students learn about the subject of educational research, how theories are created and tested, what types of research there are, how research is designed and conducted, its stages, how to define a research problem, sample, choice of methods, data collection and interpretation.
Learning outcomes
Upon finishing the course, the students will be able to understand terminology related to methodology; to design their own (e.g., action) research project for the purposes of their diploma thesis, inlucing the selection of specific research methods and techniques of data collection and analysis; to understand the rules and ethics of academic communication; interpret research results.

  • 1. General principles as well as specific aspects of academic communication in pedagogy and didactics;
  • 2. Czech and European professional journals;
  • 3. Communication in the academia, academic writing and academic texts, ethical aspects of academic writing, plagiarism;
  • 4. Technical apsects of seminar work, reference guidelines;
  • 5. Educational methodology. Educational research;
  • 6. Types of research. Qualitative and quantitative methodology, Phases of research;
  • 7. Action research as part of the teaching profession;
  • 8. Qualitative research, procedures, sampling, validity and reliability;
  • 9. Quantitative research, proceures, sampling, validity and reliatibility;
  • 10. Research methods in education, observation, interview, questionnaires, tests, experiment, content analysis.
