Course objectives
The aim the subject is the presentation of basic scientific knowledge of geology and geomorphology to students. The essential information about the Earths crust, processes of its formation, structure and the introductory rock classification will be provided in geological part of lectures. Main endogenous and exogenous terrain forming processes and land form classes will be treated in the geomorphologic section of the subject. Finally the transfer options for the geological and geomorfological knowledge to the secondary school pupils will be demonstrated. Students are able to distinguish basic rocks, assess their significance for the landscape and identify the types and forms of relief and evaluate them in terms of importance for the formation of natural and cultural landscapes.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this course the student will be able to: 1. Describe the basic parameters of the geological structure of the Earth. 2. Know the basic groups of geological processes. 3. Identify the main groups of rocks. 4. Work with a geological map and compile a regional geographical text on the geological structure of the area and its relation to the relief. 5. Have a general overview on basic classification of geological sciences. 6. Know the basic groups of genetic terrain forming processes. 7. Define the hierarchical system of territorial geomorphological objects and processes of their formation. 8. Know the types of Earth surface and describe examples of them using by their characteristic froms. 9. Know the basic sciences division geomorphological sciences. 10. To analyze relief in topographic maps in terms of slope, aspect and relative elevation.

  • 1. Introduction - conditions, structure, basic geomorphological terminology: introduction, Geomorphological terminology, Classification of geomorphology
  • 2. Earth structure: earth body structure, geotectonic hypotheses
  • 3. Motions of continents: lithospheric plates and their interfaces
  • 4. Volcanism and magma: volcanic activity and volcanic relief
  • 5. Ocean floor relief and continental shelf: ocean floor, shapes and earthquakes
  • 6. Fluvial shapes: types of valleys, development of river network, mesoforms of relief
  • 7. Karst, karst, forms and forms of relief: endokras and exokras relief
  • 8. Cryogenic shapes: shapes formed by continental and mountain glaciers
  • 9. Periglacial and aeolian forms: periglacial and aeolian processes in the past and present
  • 10. Structural geomorphology: structural shapes of relief in relation to geological structure
  • 11. Anthropogenic shapes: shapes created by or as a result of human activity
  • 12. Current problems of terrain morphology changes: shapes created due to instabilities of surface or subsurface

Assessment methods
Credit requirements: Participation in seminars, submission of four seminar papers, which will be graded A-E. Requirements for the exam: knowledge of basic knowledge to the extent determined by the content of the course according to lectures and recommended literature. The exam consists of a written part (need to obtain 60 % of points) and an oral part, which will follow the written part.

Teacher's information
A total of four exercises will be assigned in the seminars. They will be based on work with Internet thematic map sources and a topographic map obtained in electronic or paper form. Exercise topics: 1. Geological structure (source: geology.cz) 2. Quaternary cover (source: geology.cz) 3. Drilling exploration of the area, extraction of raw materials in the past (source: geology.cz) and present (source: existing and forecast deposit areas) 4. Creation of a flow slope in the selected area, longitudinal section through the valley, etc. (source: cuzk, topographic map, DMR5g)
