Course objectives
The aim of the subject is to provide an overview on historical investigation of the basic ethical problems in a broad philosophical context (ontology, epistemology, logic, and aesthetics). The other aim is to educate students in the basic ethical topics in the field of health care. Finally, to prove how students manage the required knowledge, attitudes, and skills.
Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the course student will be able to:
- specify basic developmental periods of European thinking;
- interpret a connection between important philosophical conceptions, and ;
- characterize fundamental philosophical conceptions;
- consider the influence of some philosophical conception over contemporary society;
- adopt knowledge from ethics for application to the domain of kinanthropology;
- interpret and explain the basic portfolio of the ethical dilemmas in the sphere of health care;
- present an informed approach to the majority of the ethical problems in the sphere of rehabilitation (physiotherapy, especially);
- interpret and explain the Ethical Code of Physiotherapist.
Syllabus
  • Lectures:
  • 01. Myth and Philosophy, Classical Greek philosophy, Hellenism.
  • 02. Medieval thinking, the Renaissance, the Modern Period, the Enlightenment.
  • 03. Modern thinking; postmodern thinking.
  • 04. Ethics, morality, metaethics, normative ethics, environmental ethics.
  • 05. The principles of medical ethics and bioethics: respect for autonomy, the principle of non-harming, the principle of well-doing, a question of justice.
  • 06. Ethical problems related to the beginning of life
  • 07. Death and dying, relationship to the dying, attitude to death, definition of death.
  • 08. Euthanasia and assisted suicide.
  • 09. Rights of the sick. The philosophical problem of liberty and its ethical consequences.
  • 10. Ethics of Medical Research - History, Nuremberg Code, Helsinki Declaration,
  • 11. Ethics and pediatrics - prenatal period, newborn, communicable child, adolescent, family contact, hospital and children, hospitalized child rights charter, disabled child.
  • 12. Physiotherapist's Code of Ethics (WCPT, UNIFY).

  • 01. The ethical approaches in the context of deontological, consequentialistic ethics, and the ethics of virtues.
  • 02. The analysis of the selected ethical dilemmas (of a kind of „Draisine“, or „Captain“).
  • 03. Discussion on the selected ethical dilemma.
  • 04. The epidemiological situation and its ethical aspects.
  • 05. The role of ethics committees, ethics committee at the Ministry of Health of the Czech Republic, attempts by the Council of Europe to unify basic ethical practices.
  • 06. The ethical problems of assisted reproduction.
  • 07. The hospice movement, respect for the dead body, ethical issues of transplantation, and organ donation from dead donors. Palliative care.
  • 08. Not extending life at any cost - the moral difference between actively killing a patient and letting the patient die.
  • 09. Discussion of individual rights. Medical secrets, informed consent. Right to refuse treatment.
  • 10. Informed Consent, Unethical Experiments Today, Animal Experiments.
  • 11. Ethics and genetics, ethics, and oncology. The truth about the diagnosis, the stages of accepting this fact.
  • 12. Analysis of the Physiotherapist's Code of Ethics (WCPT, UNIFY).

Teaching methods
Theoretical training through lectures and self-study; seminars on the selected ethical topic in the field of health care.
Assessment methods
Presentation of the selected topic and conduct of the discussion. 80 % participation in seminars. Essay - evaluation of oral output according to given structure. Oral interview - group colloquium.
