Course objectives
Students will acquire theoretical fundamentals of qualitative research and will get acquainted with broad range of practical methods fit for designing research on master and doctoral levels. Students will be able to discuss their particular master and doctoral research projects.
Syllabus
  • 1. Qualitative research and its theoretical and practical fundamentals. Definition of qualitative research – based on paradigm, data-collection methods, type of data, methods of data analysis. Problem of quantification. Main aims of qualitative research and its specifics: value neutrality, participants as researchers, language and its meaning. Deciding on a suitable approach. Research problem and research questions. Instances of suitability of qualitative research – acquiring new knowledge, participants’ subjective perceptions of phenomena, acquiring an understanding of phenomena, research on special populations. Comparison of quantitative and qualitative research. Mixed research. 2. Criteria of quality of qualitative research. Validity, types of validity. Credibility, confirmability, authenticity. Methods of attaining credibility. Transferability – limits of research and reflection of subjectivity. Reliability – consistency in coding. Ethics in qualitative research – confidentiality, informed agreement, ethical standards. Designing qualitative research. Linear model of research process – theories – hypotheses – operationalization – sampling – data-collection – interpretation – validization. Circular model of research process. Stages of qualitative research – goals, conceptual framework, research questions, methods, validity control, sampling, analysis and interpretation, conclusions. Goals of research – intellectual, practical, personal. Definitions of key concepts in framework – connection with theory. Definition of research questions. Research sample – theoretical sampling, theoretical saturation, snow-ball technique. 4. Designs of qualitative research. Ethnography. Grounded theory. Case study. Biographical study. Action research. 5. Data-collection methods. Participatory observation. Semi-structured interview. Focus group and group interview. Video-recording. Triangulation. 6. Data analysis – realistic and narrative approach. Data organization and coding. Methods of coding. Computer methods in coding. Common mistakes. 7. Writing qualitative research
