Course objectives
Main goals of the course:
- adoption of basic philosophical notions,
- acquaintance with philosophical disciplines,
- introduction of fundamental philosophical conceptions,
- cultivation and refinement of theoretical and critical thinking.
Learning outcomes
Student will be able to:
- reproduce the main issues of the basic areas of philosophy;
- briefly describe meaning of basic logical and philosophical concepts;
- describe selected problems of basic philosophical disciplines;
- describe these problems in practical examples;
- describe and compare selected solutions to these problems.
Syllabus
  • Thematic plan of the course:
  • 1. Introduction to philosophy (specification of philosophy, relation of philosophy to other disciplines, philosophical disciplines)
  • 2. Ontology (specification of ontology, being, causality)
  • 3. Epistemology (cognition and knowledge, Gettier’s problems, cognitive capabilities, limits of our knowledge, internalism/externalism, a priori/a posteriori, analytic/synthetic, realism, empiricism, rationalism, constructivism, thought experiments, justification of knowledge, Agrippa’s (Münchhausen’s) trilemma, foundationalism, coherentism, infinitism)
  • 4. Logic (entailment/consequence, logical operators, sentential calculus, predicate calculus, non-classical logics, principle of explosion)
  • 5. Philosophy of mind (qualia, dualism, interactional dualism, psycho-physical parallelism, monism, behaviorism, logical behaviorism, functionalism, theories of personal identity, idealism, Turing test, Chinese room, zombies)
  • 6. Philosophy of science (demarcation of science, scientific explanation, scientific method, deduction, induction, abduction, observation, protocolar sentences, Hume’s thesis)
  • 7. Philosophy of language (syntax, semantics, pragmatics, meaning, reference, hypotheses of the origin of language, compositionality, internalism and externalism, speech acts theory)

Teaching methods
The class consits of a self-preparation done by student at home and a consultation held at the faculty. For each consultation student is obliged to review given topics (theoretical preparation). In the class the information is delivered in the form of a lecture joined with discussions or solving a case study.
Assessment methods
The final written test in the time limit of 90 minutes. Students have to answer them in the time limit of 90 minutes. The test is classified on scale from A to F.
Any copying, recording or leaking tests, use of unauthorized tools, aids and communication devices, or other disruptions of objectivity of exams (credit tests) will be considered non-compliance with the conditions for course completion as well as a severe violation of the study rules. Consequently, the teacher will finish the exam (credit test) by awarding grade "F" in the Information System, and the Dean will initiate disciplinary proceedings that may result in study termination.
